Winter Emergency Preparedness Kit for Atlanta Homeowners
Georgia Winters Are Unpredictable
Atlanta homeowners know that Georgia winters are deceptive. One week it is 60 degrees, the next a polar vortex drops temperatures below freezing and coats roads in ice. The January 2014 ice storm stranded thousands across metro Atlanta and left neighborhoods without power for days. More recently, winter storms have caused burst pipes, fallen trees, and flooding in communities from Sharpsburg to Buford.
A well-stocked emergency preparedness kit is not optional. It is essential.
Water and Food Supplies
Store at least one gallon of water per person per day for a minimum of three days. Five days is better. Keep non-perishable food that requires no cooking or refrigeration, including canned goods with pull-top lids, granola bars, peanut butter, dried fruit, and crackers.
Do not forget a manual can opener if any of your supplies require one. Include food and water for pets as well. Rotate your supplies every six months to keep everything fresh.
Lighting and Power
Power outages are the most common winter emergency in the Atlanta area. Stock multiple flashlights with extra batteries, and consider a battery-powered or hand-crank emergency radio to stay informed if cell service goes down.
Portable power banks keep phones charged for communication and emergency alerts. A small portable generator is a worthwhile investment for homeowners, but never operate a generator indoors or in an attached garage. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a deadly and common risk during winter power outages.
Warmth and Shelter
When the heat goes out, temperatures inside an unheated home can drop dangerously fast, especially at night. Keep extra blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing accessible. Wool and fleece retain heat even when damp, making them better choices than cotton.
If you use a fireplace, keep a supply of dry firewood and kindling ready. Never burn treated wood, cardboard, or trash in a fireplace. If you rely on space heaters, make sure they are properly rated, in good working condition, and positioned at least three feet from anything flammable.
First Aid and Medications
Maintain a fully stocked first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and any prescription medications your household needs. During a winter emergency, pharmacies may be closed or inaccessible. Keep at least a seven-day supply of essential medications on hand at all times during winter months.
Include a first aid manual, especially if anyone in the household has specific medical needs. Hand warmers, instant cold packs, and thermal blankets are useful additions.
Tools and Safety Equipment
A basic toolkit should include a wrench for shutting off water and gas valves, duct tape, plastic sheeting for covering broken windows, and a multi-tool or utility knife. If a pipe bursts or a window breaks during a storm, having these tools immediately available can prevent thousands of dollars in secondary damage.
Know where your main water shutoff valve is located and practice turning it off before an emergency happens. In many older Atlanta-area homes, the shutoff valve is in the basement or crawl space and may be difficult to access under pressure.
Important Documents
Keep copies of your homeowner's insurance policy, identification documents, medical records, and emergency contact numbers in a waterproof container inside your kit. If you need to evacuate or file an insurance claim, having these documents accessible saves critical time.
Store digital copies in a secure cloud account as a backup.
Communication Plan
Establish a communication plan with your household. Designate an out-of-state contact person who can relay messages if local communication is disrupted. Make sure every family member knows the plan, including where to meet if you need to leave the house.
When Winter Damage Happens
Even the best preparation cannot prevent every emergency. Burst pipes, ice dams, and roof damage from fallen branches are common across the Atlanta metro area during winter storms. When water or fire damage strikes, fast professional response is the difference between a manageable repair and a catastrophic loss.
