Space Heaters Are Convenient but Dangerous

Space heaters are one of the most popular ways to heat individual rooms, especially in older homes where central heating is uneven or expensive to run. But according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, portable space heaters are involved in approximately 1,700 house fires per year, resulting in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries.

The risk is not the heater itself. It is how people use them. Following a few critical safety rules makes the difference between staying warm and losing your home.

Choose the Right Heater

Not all space heaters are created equal. Look for models that carry the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or ETL mark, which means they have been tested to meet current safety standards. Choose a heater with an automatic shutoff that activates if the unit tips over or overheats.

Ceramic heaters and oil-filled radiator-style heaters are generally safer than exposed-coil models because their heating elements are enclosed. For bedrooms, look for heaters specifically designed for overnight use with low-temperature settings and built-in timers.

Maintain a Three-Foot Clearance Zone

The number one rule of space heater safety is maintaining at least three feet of clearance between the heater and anything that can burn. This includes furniture, curtains, bedding, clothing, rugs, and paper. Many space heater fires start when a heater is placed on a carpet too close to a bed skirt or draped curtain.

Place heaters on flat, hard, non-flammable surfaces only. Never place a space heater on a table, chair, shelf, or any elevated surface where it could tip over.

Never Use Extension Cords

Space heaters draw significant electrical current. Plugging them into extension cords or power strips creates a serious fire hazard because these devices may not be rated for the heater's wattage. The cord overheats, the insulation melts, and a fire starts inside the wall or at the outlet.

Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. If the cord does not reach, move the heater rather than using an extension cord. If outlets in your home are limited, have an electrician install additional ones rather than relying on workarounds.

Never Leave a Heater Unattended

Turn off space heaters every time you leave the room and before going to sleep. Even heaters with automatic shutoff features can malfunction. Treat a running space heater the same way you would treat an open flame. If no one is there to monitor it, it should be off.

This rule is especially important in homes with children or pets who may knock a heater over or place items on top of it.

Inspect Your Heater Annually

Before the first use each season, inspect the heater for damaged cords, cracked housings, bent prongs, and any signs of wear. A frayed cord is not a minor issue; it is a fire waiting to happen. If the heater shows any damage, replace it. The cost of a new space heater is nothing compared to the cost of a house fire.

Clean dust and lint from the heater's intake vents and heating elements. Accumulated dust can ignite when the heater is first turned on after months of storage.

Know the Signs of Electrical Problems

If using a space heater causes your lights to dim, your circuit breaker to trip, or a burning smell near the outlet, stop using the heater immediately. These are signs that your home's electrical system cannot safely handle the load.

Older homes in established neighborhoods across Sharpsburg, Stockbridge, and Newnan may have outdated wiring that was never designed for today's electrical demands. An electrical inspection is a smart investment before relying on space heaters for supplemental heat.
