Blog/Prevention & Tips/How Fall Gutter Maintenance Makes a Diff…

As the leaves begin to change color and the autumn air cools down, your to-do list may start filling up in preparation for the colder months. It is very common to forget one critical chore that can save you an ample amount of money before your home has structural damage: gutter cleaning.

While fall is absolutely beautiful, it also brings a heavy downpour of leaves, pine needles, and twigs straight onto the roof. While scooping out that wet muck is nobody's favorite chore, skipping it poses a huge risk to your property. Here is exactly how spending a weekend morning on your gutters can save you thousands of dollars in restoration costs down the road.

The Domino Effect

When rain falls on your roof, your gutters have one job: collect that water and route it safely away from your property. When they are packed with leaves, sticks, and pine needles, that water has nowhere to go.

Instead of flowing through the gutter, the water overflows. This triggers a destructive chain reaction across your property:

1. Basement and Crawlspace Flooding

When water spills over the edge of your gutters, it drops straight down to the base of your home. This saturates the soil directly next to your foundation. Over time, that pressure forces that water through cracks in your concrete (yes, even the smallest of cracks!), leaving you with a flooded basement, saturated drywall, and ruined contents.

2. Cracked Foundations

Water expands when it freezes. If that oversaturated soil around your foundation freezes during the winter, it can cause the ground to shift. This creates deep structural cracks in your foundation walls that are incredibly expensive to repair.

3. Roof and Fascia Rot

When a gutter is full, water backs up under your shingles. This constant moisture rots out the wooden fascia boards (the trim that is behind the gutters) and the roof decking. Once that wood rots, water easily finds its way into your attic and ceilings.

4. Mold Growth

A hidden leak from overflowing gutters into your attic or walls can create a thriving mold colony within 24 to 48 hours, threatening your indoor air quality and requiring professional mold remediation.

All in all, as a water mitigation company, we want to ensure that all homeowners are educated and prepared to properly care for their home.
