Fire Safety Tips for Cozy Fall Nights
Fall Comfort Comes With Fire Risk
As temperatures cool across metro Atlanta, homeowners reach for the comforts that define fall evenings: crackling fireplaces, scented candles, warm blankets, and space heaters taking the edge off chilly rooms. Each of these creates a fire risk that deserves attention.
Fall is when fire safety habits from the warm months get tested. The fireplace that has been dormant since March, the space heater pulled from storage, and the candles lit for ambiance all need to be used safely.
Fireplace Safety
Before lighting your first fire of the season, have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a certified chimney sweep. Creosote, a highly flammable byproduct of wood burning, accumulates on chimney walls and is a leading cause of chimney fires. An annual inspection catches creosote buildup, cracks in the flue liner, and animal nests that can block airflow.
Use a fireplace screen to contain sparks and embers. Keep all furniture, curtains, and decorations at least three feet from the fireplace opening. Never burn treated wood, painted wood, cardboard, or wrapping paper, as these materials produce excessive creosote and can release toxic fumes.
Open the damper fully before lighting a fire and keep it open until the ashes are completely cool. Close it only when no heat remains to prevent carbon monoxide from being drawn back into the home.
Space Heater Safety
Space heaters are a supplemental heat source, not a primary one. Use them only in occupied rooms and turn them off when leaving the room or going to sleep. Maintain at least three feet of clearance between the heater and anything flammable.
Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets, never into extension cords or power strips. Ensure the heater has a tip-over shutoff switch and an overheat protection feature. Inspect the cord for damage before each use.
Candle Safety
Candles are a hallmark of fall ambiance but remain a leading cause of preventable house fires. Place candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces away from curtains, paper, and decorations. Never leave candles burning when you leave the room or go to sleep. Consider battery-operated LED candles for unattended decorative displays.
Keep candles out of reach of children and pets. Ensure the candle holder is large enough to catch dripping wax and sturdy enough to prevent tipping.
Cooking Safety During Fall Entertaining
Fall entertaining often means extended cooking sessions for holiday gatherings. Never leave cooking unattended, especially when using the stovetop. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and ensure everyone in the household knows how to use it.
Deep-frying turkeys and other outdoor cooking for fall celebrations introduces additional risks. Use outdoor fryers only on level surfaces, away from structures, and never on decks or in garages. Keep children and pets clear of the cooking area.
Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Test every smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in your home at the start of fall. Replace batteries if you have not done so in the past six months. Replace any detector that is more than 10 years old, as the sensors degrade over time even if the unit appears to function.
Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and near sleeping areas. Fireplaces, gas furnaces, and attached garages all produce carbon monoxide, and fall is when these sources become active after months of dormancy.
