Day 2: Exterior Home Prep – Your First Line of Defense
If water can’t get in, it can’t cause damage. Taking time to prepare the outside of your home can save you thousands in repairs—and possibly an insurance claim.
🧰 5 Exterior Tips to Prep for Spring Storms:
- Clean Your Gutters & Downspouts
Clogged gutters cause water to overflow and pool near your foundation.
➤ Make sure water flows at least 5 feet away from your home.
- Extend Downspouts
Add extensions or splash blocks to direct rainwater away from your home.
- Check Roof & Shingles
Missing or damaged shingles let water seep into your attic.
➤ Schedule a roof inspection if it’s been more than 5 years.
- Inspect Foundation Cracks
Even small cracks can let water into basements or crawlspaces during a heavy storm.
➤ Use hydraulic cement or call a pro to seal them.
- Clear Yard Drains & Slope Soil Away from the House
Your yard should slope gently away from your foundation to help drain water.
Champion’s Tip: We often get calls after a storm where damage could’ve been prevented with these simple steps. A little prep goes a long way.
