How to Safely Use Space Heaters in Winter: Part 1

As temperatures drop, space heaters become a convenient solution to keep specific areas of your home warm and cozy. However, improper use of space heaters is one of the leading causes of house fires during the winter months. By following safety guidelines, you can enjoy the warmth without compromising your safety. Here are essential tips for safely using space heaters this winter.

1. Choose the Right Space Heater

Selecting a space heater with the right features can significantly reduce fire risks.

  • Look for Safety Features: Opt for models with built-in safety features such as tip-over protection and overheat shut-off.
  • Check for Certifications: Purchase heaters that are certified by safety organizations like UL (Underwriters Laboratories).
  • Select the Appropriate Size: Choose a heater suited for the room size to avoid overheating.

2. Keep Space Heaters Away from Flammable Materials

The leading cause of space heater-related fires is proximity to combustible items.

  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep the heater at least three feet away from flammable materials like curtains, furniture, bedding, or papers.
  • Create a Clear Zone: Ensure the area around the heater is free of clutter.

3. Place the Heater on a Stable Surface

The location of your space heater matters for both safety and efficiency.

  • Use a Flat, Non-Flammable Surface: Place the heater on the floor, not on furniture, tables, or carpets.
  • Avoid High-Traffic Areas: Position the heater where it won’t be accidentally knocked over.

4. Plug the Heater Directly into a Wall Outlet

Improper electrical connections can lead to overheating or electrical fires.

  • Avoid Extension Cords: Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, as extension cords and power strips may overheat.
  • Inspect the Cord: Check the heater’s power cord for damage before use. Replace the heater if the cord is frayed or damaged.

5. Never Leave a Space Heater Unattended

Leaving a space heater running unattended is a significant safety risk.

  • Turn It Off: Always turn off and unplug the heater when leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Monitor Usage: Never leave the heater running overnight or while you’re out of the house.
