🌧 Spring Storm Preparedness: How to Protect Your Home from Flooding: Day 3: Interior Prep – Keeping Water Out (or Contained)

Even with solid exterior prep, some storms are too strong. That’s why you also need to prepare the inside of your home—especially basements, crawlspaces, and ground-level rooms.

🏠 Interior Flood Prevention Tips:

  1. Install a Sump Pump
It automatically removes water that collects in your basement.
➤ Make sure it has a battery backup for power outages.
  2. Seal Basement Walls & Floors
Use waterproofing paint or sealant on interior foundation walls.
  3. Elevate Appliances
Raise water heaters, washers, and HVAC systems off the ground using concrete blocks or platforms.
  4. Install Water Alarms
These small devices alert you when water is detected in areas like under sinks or in basements.
  5. Store Valuables in Waterproof Containers
Use plastic bins with tight lids and keep them off the floor.

Champion’s Tip: Water damage doesn’t always happen in a dramatic flood. Even a small leak left unchecked can cause major mold issues later.
